Frequently Asked Questions
-
Can I compost everything that says compostable?
Not always. Some materials are designed for commercial composting systems, which reach higher temperatures than backyard piles. Local programs vary.
-
Do I need to remove stickers or tape before recycling the box?
Nope! Small paper stickers and paper tape can stay on the box when recycling. All our materials are compostable.
-
Why not just say everything is compostable?
Because disposal systems differ by town. We choose materials with more than one responsible end‑of‑life option, so you can do what works locally.
-
What should I do if I’m unsure?
When in doubt, recycling paper materials is always a safe option. You can check with your local municipalities for details around plastics.
-
Can I compost this at home, or does it need commercial composting?
Many paper‑based materials are made from natural fibers and can break down in home compost over time. That said, thicker or denser papers tend to break down more slowly, and therefore, more reliably in commercial composting systems, which run hotter and faster. Because composting programs vary by town, we recommend composting where accepted — and when in doubt, recycling paper materials works!
-
I've never heard of a sustainable ice pack, is this real? What should I do with it?
Our ice packs are as green as our gardens! They are 100% drain-safe and non-toxic—simply snip the corner and pour the gel down the sink with a bit of warm water. Bonus tip: If your pack is clear, the gel is actually a nitrogen-based plant food! You can dilute it in a watering can (about 1 part gel to 4 parts water) to give your garden a nutrient boost. Once empty, rinse the pouch and recycle it at a grocery store plastic bag drop-off (if clear film).
-
The hydration bag. Is this really sustainable?
These offer the high-performance waterproof barrier of plastic but are made from renewable starches and fibers. They keep the water exactly where it belongs—on the stems—and are certified Home Compostable, so they can still return to the earth just like paper would!
